About BioCASE and GBIF

GBIF, the Global Biodiversity Information Facility is a mega-science project with the aim "to make the world's primary data on biodiversity freely and universally available via the Internet" (www.gbif.net). GBIF currently focuses on species checklist data (to create an Electronic Catalogue of Named Organisms) and on the mobilisation of primary species occurrence data ("unit-level data", i.e. specimen or observation records).

GBIF and BioCASE share the same philosophy of open access to data resources.
Neither GBIF nor BioCASE exclude others to build specialised portals using the data sources and making use of the software and services developed for the public domain, as long as the provisions made by the data providers are respected.

GBIF has taken up technical developments of BioCASE:
After a working prototype was developed in 2003, GBIF also accepted the BioCASE data transmission protocol as an alternative to the DiGIR protocol BioCASE will provide full access to its registry for GBIF. Being a BioCASE provider thus means being a GBIF provider.
